Answering Your Questions: Curly Hair
17.01.2025
When we asked our community what they wanted to know when it came to their curly hair, they said:
-
How can I define my curls?
-
How can I reduce frizz?
-
How do I combat dryness?
In this blog, we’ve rounded up some of our stylist-approved tips for caring for your curly and wavy hair, from achieving healthy hair to getting beautifully defined curls.
Moisture is key
Curly hair tends to be drier than straight hair because the natural oils from your scalp have a harder time traveling down the twists of your curls. Look for wash and care products that are rich in moisturising ingredients like shea butter, argan oil, or coconut oil.
Sulphate-free shampoos
Another way to keep your curls feeling moisturised is by opting for sulphate-free shampoos. Sulphates are cleansing agents added to shampoos to help to wash away dirt and oil from the hair, and can help with deep cleansing to remove product and oil build-up. However, they can also strip your hair of its natural oils, which can leave hair feeling dry and brittle. For this reason, we recommend opting for sulphate-free shampoos that will still give you a gentle cleanse whilst retaining moisture.
Deep Conditioning
Deep conditioning your hair regularly can help give some extra moisture and leave hair feeling soft. We recommend applying conditioner to the mid-lengths to the ends of your hair and using a wide-tooth comb to comb the conditioner through your hair, helping to gently detangle. When rinsing out your conditioner, try to avoid over-rinsing which leaves your hair feeling and sounding ‘squeaky’ as this will remove all the product and goodness that’ll keep your hair feeling moisturised.
Leave-In Conditioner
Leave-in conditioners are brilliant for locking-in moisture and further defining your curls. They’re also a great product to apply between washes, as they can replenish and enhance curls and detangle. We recommend applying a leave-in conditioner to your mid-lengths and ends only, avoiding your scalp to reduce greasiness.
Curl Creams and Gels
Curl creams and gels are excellent products for helping to maintain the shape and structure of your curls, and can also help to keep hair frizz-free.
We recommend choosing a gel serum, as they have a lighter feel and can add moisture, shine and definition without weighing the hair down or giving a ‘crunchy’ feeling. After applying a curl gel, you can scrunch, coil or twist your curls to help shape them before drying with a diffuser.
Heat Styling
Excess heat can lead to damaged, dry hair that looks ‘frizzy’, so we recommend avoiding heat styling as much as possible and always using heat-protecting products if you do use heat tools. To reduce damage and help add definition to curls, we recommend using a diffuser on a low heat setting, with a heat protectant applied beforehand
