Hairdressing Professional Apprenticeship

Duration:
20 to 24 months

What are the entry requirements?

You don’t need any hairdressing qualifications before you take your Hairdressing Professional but any work experience will be of benefit.

You will need either a minimum of GCSE Grade 3 in both Maths and English, or Functional Skills at Level 1. You will also be required to achieve Entry Level 3.5 or above in Maths and English initial assessment during the recruitment process.

It is also important that you have the ability to take an active part in studying for your hairdressing qualification and have good employability skills such as reliability, communication and teamwork

What does the course cover?

When you achieve your Level 2 Hairdressing Professional Diploma and successfully complete the End-Point Assessment, you will be qualified as a hairdresser and will have learned how to:

  • Shampoo, condition & treat the hair and scalp
  • Cut, style, finish and dress hair
  • Colour and lighten hair
  • Perm hair and understand relaxing hair service
  • Carry out an effective client consultation
  • You will also learn about customer care, reception and employment responsibilities

How is the course delivered?

You will learn through a combination of in salon practical work as well as classroom and virtual theory learning. We have an excellent apprentice to tutor ratio which enables us to deliver personalised support and attention.

Whilst at our Training Centre, our experienced tutors will provide you with knowledge and practical skill development opportunities covering every aspect of level two hairdressing. Our Training Salon is run on a commercial basis in a busy shopping area, so you will have every opportunity to work on ‘real’ and diverse clients throughout your training.

You will be assessed by being observed, orally questioned and  through completion of written tests and assignments. Your tutor will provide you with clear and fair feedback to help you progress further.

How many hours will I work?

You will be employed for a minimum of 30 hours a week. (Maximum of 40)

This includes the time you will spend in virtual classrooms, on-site in our training centre and the days and hours per week agreed with your employer and detailed in your apprenticeship training plan and the contract of employment provided by your employer.

Please note you will be paid for all working hours; including those spent in the training centre.

Your apprenticeship is a combination of ON and OFF-THE-JOB learning. To continue an apprenticeship you must complete at least 6 hours per week of off-the-job activity so the hours you complete within Collinge & Co Training are extremely important.

How will I be assessed?

You can expect to complete:

  • Assignments or projects
  • Practical skill assessments
  • Written online tests
  • Mock end-point assessments
  • A portfolio of evidence

When you have completed all your e-portfolio assessments and are confident in your knowledge and practical hairdressing skills you will have reached Gateway. Now, you will be ready to take the End Point Assessment, which when achieved provides you with your apprentice EPA certificate and grade of achievement. Your End Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO) will be City & Guilds.

Your End Point Assessment is made up of:

  • An online knowledge test
  • A practical assessment where you will be observed by an Independent End Point Assessor (IEPA)
  • Questioning by the assessor to check you have the knowledge and understanding of a true Hair Professional.
  • A ‘virtual discussion’ with the assessor.

What qualifications will I gain?

Upon successful completion of your course and end-point assessment (EPA), you will gain a Level 2 Diploma for Hairdressing Professionals and an EPA certificate with a grade of either pass, merit or distinction.

  • UK Government, Skills England, approved course, fully-funded by the UK Government.
  • Large employers with more 50 employees will have to fund 5% of the course cost if the apprentice is aged 25 and over.
  • If the apprentice is required to study and pass functional skills level 2, funding will be provided by the UK Government.

Advanced & Creative Hair Professional Apprenticeship

Duration: 13 months
Apprenticeship Standard: ST0214, Advanced and Creative Hair Professional
Qualification: Collinge & Co Level 3 Certificate
Course level: Level 3
Study method: Full-time (One day a week in training centre)

What are the entry requirements?

You will need to first complete your Hairdressing Professional Diploma and End-Point Assessment.

You require, either a minimum of GCSE Grade 3 in both Maths and English, or Functional Skills at Level 1 certification. You will also be required to achieve Level 1 or above in Maths and English initial assessment during interview.

You will undertake an  interview and initial assessment process which will include a trade test, unless  you can provide us with your Hair/ Hairdressing Professional End Point Assessment certificate.

Age requirements

For higher education-age students and upwards.

What does the course cover?

  • Understanding and ability to deliver client personalisation
  • Building a ‘look collection’ created from your own creative and advanced hairdressing skills and services.
  • Creative hair cutting skill development to include hair thinning; texturizing techniques and precision cutting at an advanced level.
  • Creative colouring and colour conversion to include in-depth client consultation
  • Smoothing and strengthening of hair
  • Presentation skills to prepare you for your professional discussion within end point assessment.
  • The ability to deal with all manner of hairdressing styles, methods and clients

How is the course delivered?

You will be learning in our Bold Street training centre, 99 Bold Street, Liverpool L1 4HF and will attend one day per week. The rest of your week you will be with your employer learning in the workplace, with days and hours agreed within your apprenticeship contract of employment.

How many hours will I work?

You will attend Collinge & Co Training Graduates for one day per week throughout the majority of your training duration.

You will attend your employer workplace, likely running a client base of your own, for the remaining hours you need to cover each week. Overall you will complete and be paid for between 30 or 40 hours per week with 7 of these hours spent within Collinge & Co Training and the remaining hours agreed with your employer in your salon workplace.

How will I be assessed?

You can expect to complete:

  • Assignments
  • Practical advanced skill assessments
  • Developing and creating a ‘Look Collection’
  • Written online tests
  • A portfolio of evidence
  • Creating a ‘total look’ for a photoshoot
  • Inter-Salon hair competition

Your End Point Assessment is made up of:

  • An online knowledge test
  • A practical assessment where you will be observed by an Independent End Point Assessor (IEPA)
  • A professional discussion where you will present your ‘look collection’ and be questioned by the Independent Assessor.

What qualifications will I gain?

Upon successful completion of your course and End Point Assessment (EPA), you will receive a Collinge & Co Training certificate and an EPA certificate with a grade of either pass, merit or distinction
