Can heated styling tools cause hair damage?

12.05.2026

This week, we’re answering another of our community questions: are straighteners and other heated styling tools bad for your hair?

You’ll learn why heat can cause damage, how to spot the signs, and the simple steps that you can take to help you protect your hair.

Q: Are styling tools bad for my hair?

The short answer is yes, heated tools can cause damage, however there are steps you can take to help reduce the risk of damage whilst still getting gorgeous results.

It’s a slightly more complex question than it seems, because there are a few variables at play: how often you use heat tools, what temperature you use and the existing condition of your hair.

Excessive heat is one of the most common causes of damage. Whether it’s a hairdryer, curler or straighteners, high temperatures can cause the hair cuticle (the outer protective layer) to lift. That makes hair more prone to moisture loss and can weaken the protein structure inside the hair, reducing elasticity and leading to breakage over time.

Q: How can styling tools cause damage?

The cuticle is made up of overlapping cells, a bit like tiny scales or roof tiles. When those layers lift, hair can start to look and feel rough, dry and brittle. Heat can also affect the internal bonds within the hair, leaving it weaker and more prone to snapping.

Very high temperatures can also lift the cuticle while weakening the cortex. This leaves the hair shaft more vulnerable to breakage and split ends, which can make lengths feel thinner and more fragile.

If your hair looks and feels drier than usual, heat damage may be part of the picture, especially if it’s also looking dull or a little brassy. Heat can strip away some of the natural oils that keep hair feeling supple and hydrated.

Q: How do I know if my styling tools are causing damage?

Hair that’s damaged might look or feel like:
  • Dry, brittle texture
  • Excessive breakage and split ends
  • Dull appearance
  • Frizz and flyaways
  • Colour fading quickly
If your hair feels rough or brittle, especially after styling, it’s worth taking a closer look at your routine. Heat isn’t the only cause of damage, but it is a common one, particularly if you’re using heated tools frequently or at very high temperatures.

Q: How can I protect my hair against damage from styling tools?

Always use a heat protectant

If you regularly use heated tools, a heat protectant is essential. These products create a protective barrier that helps to minimise moisture loss and heat-related damage. Blow Dry Lotion is our go-to for adding shine while giving hair an extra layer of protection.

Minimise exposure to high temperatures

Even with a heat protectant, repeated high heat can weaken hair over time. To reduce the risk of damage, we recommend using a lower heat setting where possible. You can also use a diffuser attachment on your hairdryer to distribute heat more evenly when drying your hair, which is especially helpful for defining curls and waves for curly hair types.

Make sure hair is dry before you style

Unless your tool specifically says it can be used on wet or damp hair, always make sure hair is fully dry before using curlers or straighteners.

This also applies to blow drying with brushes. Dry your roots and blast-dry your hair first, then start building shape and volume with your brushes once it’s around 60-80% dry.

Use the right temperature for your hair type

If your tool has different heat settings, choose one that suits your hair type and condition.

Fine or thin hair is generally more prone to heat damage, so it is best to use a lower temperature. Thicker or coarser hair can usually tolerate a higher heat setting, but it is still worth starting low and increasing if needed.

Q: Can heat damaged hair be reversed?

Whilst damage can’t be ‘reversed’, there are things you can do to help your hair look and feel healthier, and to help prevent or minimise future heat damage.

Use Leave-In Treatments

Leave-in conditioners and serums help provide extra moisture and protection throughout the day. Look for ingredients like proteins, oils and humectants (such as glycerine), which can help draw in and lock in moisture, reinforce the hair structure and smooth the cuticle.

Deep Condition Regularly

Using a deep conditioning mask can replenish lost moisture and improve elasticity. It also helps hair feel more supple and manageable, which is ideal if your hair is prone to tangling. Our hair mask of choice is Hair Treat, which we recommend using once a week as part of your normal routine.

Get Regular Trims

Trimming off split ends prevents further breakage and keeps hair looking healthier and fuller. Even if you’re growing your hair, we still recommend a trim every six to eight weeks.

Be gentler with damaged hair

If your hair is already feeling fragile, try to reduce friction where you can. Use detangling products and brush gently to avoid unnecessary friction and strain on your hair, and avoid hairstyles that may put a lot of tension on the hair, like tight buns or ponytails. You can also avoid roughly towel drying your hair and protect your hair while you still with a silk bonnet, loose braid or silk pillowcase to help prevent friction from tossing and turning in your sleep.

In-salon treatments

If you feel your hair needs a little extra care, you may want to explore in-salon treatment options. We offer Wella Ultimate Repair, a four-step in-salon treatment powered by alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) and omega-9. It helps strengthen and rebuild hair from the inside out, with visible results after just one visit.

Your treatment includes a relaxing head massage and begins with the Ultimate Repair Shampoo, followed by the Conditioner or Mask (depending on your hair type). Next, Miracle Hair Rescue is misted through the hair to help strengthen and smooth. Finally, the Leave-In is applied to help protect against breakage, heat and UV damage, leaving hair looking healthier, shinier and smoother.

With a careful haircare routine, you can take steps to help prevent damage from heated styling tools like straighteners, curlers and hair dryers.
