Summer Support for Youth Zones

11.08.2022

This August and September, we are proud to support two fantastic charities; The Hive Youth Zone in Wirral and Manchester Youth Zone in Harpurhey.

Between 15 August and 11 September, for every appointment attended in our salons, Andrew Collinge will donate £1 to the youth zones towards their provision of free meals for young people in need during the summer break, to help alleviate holiday hunger.

The two youth zones are for young people aged 8-19 (up to 25 with additional needs), providing a safe space for somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to. The Youth Zones provide an inclusive environment where young people can enjoy themselves, whilst raising their aspirations and confidence, to ultimately create a happier and healthier generation.

The youth zones are based in areas with some of the highest levels of deprivation in the country, where up to one-in-two children live in poverty. The youth zones exist to change this story: they do not believe that any child should go hungry or have their future pre-determined by where they are born.

The Venues

The Hive in Wirral has 3000 members, with over 1250 visits per week. Manchester Youth Zone has 1400 active members, with an average of 1000 visits per week.

Fun and inclusive activities are provided in both purpose-built centres. Young people experience a choice of up to 20 activities each session, including: arts, media, sports, life skills, enterprise and employability. They are places where every single young person can be inspired, challenged and make friends; for many it offers so much more – a lifeline to overcome the challenges in their lives.

Programmes are developed which build resilient, determined and confident young adults.

Health and Wellbeing

The Hive has its own Salon, which is a wonderfully relaxing space, located off the atrium at the heart of the Hive. Over the last five years it has become a place with dual purpose. Whilst young people get their nails and hair done, they relax, open up and start to talk – about their lives, their dreams, their fears and hopes.

The Hive reports:

“We run specific sessions on well-being, giving young people a safe place to talk about their feelings, emotions and identities. We aim to de-mystify; grow self-esteem; self-belief; self-confidence, and above all, self-care.

Our well-being session are a vital part of our work, generating the following impact:

  • Emotional skills – the last cohort felt that they were 68% more equipped emotionally to deal with the changes before them.
  • Aspirations and achievement – grew by 57% as young people felt more hopeful and ambitious for the future.
  • Social skills and relationships – young people felt that they were 33% more able to understand and develop ongoing healthy relationships and feel more confident about doing so.
  • Confidence – they also felt that their health and wellbeing had improved by more than 25%, and their overall confidence had grown by more than 20%.

Our overarching aim is to encourage young people to be the best version of themselves. We aim to address insecurities, self-consciousness, self-doubt, embarrassment, friendship issues, self-confidence issues and provide a space for them to open up about their worries.”

At Andrew Collinge, the potential of people and personal transformation is our passion. It has the power to change how people feel about themselves – and bring out their best. This is why we enjoy working with these charities and fully support their vision and values.
